US health officials have granted final approval for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children. The announcement was made by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky shortly after the CDC’s decision. While the FDA had given the green light for the Pfizer vaccine to be administered to children aged 5 to 11, it is the CDC that provides recommendations on who should receive the vaccine. As a result, this vaccine option is now available to a total of 28 million children within this specific age range.
In anticipation of the CDC’s verdict, Pfizer and its partner BioNTech had already dispatched numerous vaccine doses to states, medical practices, and pharmacies. Notably, the vaccine doses intended for children are distinguishable by their orange caps, a measure taken to prevent any confusion with the adult vaccine vials, which are identifiable by their purple tops.
