Healthy Nurses, Healthy Democracy

From voting to advocacy, nurses play a critical role in shaping policies that affect patient care, community well-being, and the future of health care. Your voice matters. As we celebrate Civic Health Month this August, we encourage you to make it heard!
A healthier democracy starts with engaged citizens, and nurses are uniquely positioned to lead that change.
When lawmakers hear directly from nurses, policy becomes personal. Your experiences help elected officials understand how their decisions play out in exam rooms, nursing schools, and emergency departments in the communities they represent. These policy and budget impacts aren’t limited to Washington, D.C.; some of the most important decisions affecting health are made close to home.

State and local leaders shape policies on public transportation, sanitation, schools, housing, clean water, and more. While these issue areas may seem unrelated at first glance, they have a profound impact on public health. Research shows that 80% of health outcomes are determined by factors outside of healthcare facilities. Think about the difference more affordable housing, better funded schools, or safer roads could make for your family and the patients you care for. Something as simple as installing a speed bump on a busy street could prevent injuries and strengthen the safety of your community.

That’s why your input matters. Statistics and data are important, but nothing is more powerful than a nurse sharing a real-world story. Another reason to get involved—being civically engaged is good for you!

Civic participation is associated with better self-reported health. Additionally, according to the Health and Democracy Index, states that make voting more accessible “enjoy greater social cohesion, improved community conditions, and better health.” Yet, healthcare workers are significantly less likely to vote than the general public. Long shifts and demanding schedules can make it harder engage and get to the polls. This August, challenge yourself to make your voice heard.

Nurses are a trusted source and have been voted the most honest and ethical profession for 24 years in a row. Help shape policies that support healthier communities and a better future for nursing by taking action.
